project began as a longing for my lost identity, which gradually took shape into a multi-media project exploring cultural assimilation and opacity through the lens of myself, a first-generation American and second-generation immigrant. The primary purpose of this project was to present a visual narrative of the internal and external struggles of being caught between two cultures, mourning the loss of parts of myself while revealing what remained amidst the rubble, still holding on.
Débutante is divided into three parts: costume design, photography, and graphic design, presented as a photo book. The title carries two meanings: the first has a literal connection to the word débutante, as this project marks my first grand presentation of myself to society; the second relates to the overarching theme of the garments-ball gowns, reminiscent of the elaborate balls once held to introduce young women to the world.
